Much of what you need to know about SnowShoe – guitarist Rahul Nadkarni’s bedroom project – can be found on the Soundcloud link given below. He takes audio samples from old tapes, choppedup- sped-up recordings of his own voice and computer software to create the dreamy atmosphere that Sky Rabbit hops around in.
What the Soundcloud page doesn’t tell you is that Nadkarni will perform as SnowShoe in the coming weeks. He’s been recording for a year now and he and his dreamscapecreator buddy Sushant Thatte (his Soundcloud is called Kaliedofonik) recently played their first gig at Cool Chef Cafe. Nadkarni played guitar and keys along with live samples on his computer, not unlike Delhi-based musician Dualist Inquiry.
One of the tracks on his Soundcloud called “Winds & Rockets” opens with what sounds like the ending of a broken record, transmitted over a weak and fuzzy radio broadcast. Nadkarni shows off his self-taught auditory skills on songs like “Anteroom” – the knock-on-wood tick-tocks sound like they’re coming from the space between your ears and nose. As for what made him come up with the stage name, he said it had nothing to do with experiencing snow – he still hasn’t. “It’s just where your head goes,” he said.
