Taking the Stage

25 young actors who are firing up the city theatre

Mumbai’s theatre scene is sparkling with a new generation of actors. Unlike so many performers from previous generations who saved their romance with the footlights for after-work hours, today’s young guns are full-timers, eking out a living from theatre-related activities. Actors juggle rehearsals with flexible working hours at media houses, in movies and television shows, and for shoots for advertising films, yet rarely stint on their commitment to their craft. Some of these actors are also incredibly versatile: they form their own companies and take a stab at writing and directing. And unlike many older actors, they often perform across groups and languages – a reflection of how the scene itself has grown and matured.

We cast a spotlight on 25 young actors from English, Hindi and Marathi productions who perform with panache. They are versatile, consistently good, and above all, fun to watch.
